A Billboard from Gibraltar

My name is Debbie and I am GSR for Gibraltar. At an intergroup meeting, Pat from the Costa del Sol PI group spoke a little bit about what they were doing, which prompted me to join the PI group. (To be honest I was starting to feel a little uninspired and decided that doing more service might help . . . and it did!)

At the first PI meeting I attended, members were brainstorming ideas on how to get the message to the still suffering alcoholic.

I go in and out of Gibraltar at least twice a week and it just popped into my head (thank you HP!!) that it may be a good idea to advertise on the LED screen/billboard, which is situated on the Spanish side of the entrance to the Spanish/Gibraltar border.

For those who don’t know, there is passport control at the Spain/Gibraltar border. Hundreds of cars drive in every day and the screen is in front of them for a 200 metre stretch.  Thousands of pedestrians – tourists, cross-frontier workers, Gibraltarians who live/shop/visit Spain – also pass by the screen. Surely there must be still suffering alcoholics amongst them? The PI group thought it was a good idea and intergroup had already agreed more funds for PI purposes, and so the process began.

After speaking to the billboard owner, a reduced price for 6 months was agreed. (Muchos gracias Antonio!)

The next step was to produce the video and this was done by Nils, who did a great job of creating an eye catching ad, keeping it simple but effective.

This was forwarded to the billboard owner with the agreed start date of 1st April.

On the morning of the 1st, I received a message from one of our Gibraltar members to say that he’d seen the ad as he drove in. When I left Gib that afternoon, sure enough, there it was!

Hopefully it will be seen by many still suffering alcoholics who will perhaps pick up the phone and begin the journey of recovery.

I’m so grateful to be sober and a member of this amazing fellowship.
