Update from CER’s Conference Delegates – January 2021

What’s happening with Conference in 2021?

As previously announced, Conference 2020 will now be combined with Conference 2021. The Conference Questions 2020, to which the fellowship has already provided feedback, have been amended to include three new questions and one new piece of literature.

Of the three new questions, one is a clarification about Trustee appointments, one is about archive material and one directly relates to the Fellowship’s experience of AA meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hints and Suggestions pamphlet has also been revised and will be reviewed by Conference.

The information about the new questions was published in the Winter 2020 edition of AA Service News and details have also been circulated by our Region and Intergroup Secretaries. If you haven’t yet seen them you can find them here:

Your delegates need you!

As always – your Delegates to Conference need you. We have already received much feedback from you on the original 2020 topics, but it may be that the last year has changed your groups’ views on your previous responses. If so, we welcome any updates.

We certainly need feedback from everyone on the three new questions and literature items, so Region reps and GSRs, please do go back to your various groups and ask for feedback as we would do in “normal” times. Deadline for feedback is currently 31 March 2021

Conference in pre-pandemic times

The General Service Conference of AA Great Britain and Continental Europe is the practical means by which the group conscience can express itself. In “normal” times, and since 1966, the Conference meets annually, and face-to-face in the City of York, England.

There are many excellent documents and resources available to help members, groups, and intergroups  understand the Conference process both on the CER website https://alcoholics-anonymous.euand the AA GB website https://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk

What happened to Conference 2020?

The questions for Conference 2020 were published in December 2019 and Conference 2020 was planned to meet as usual in York in April 2020. In the light of lockdowns and travel restrictions due to COVID-19 the Conference steering committee (CSC) decided to postpone Conference 2020 to October 2020.

In August 2020 it became clear that a face-to-face conference in 2020 was not going to be possible. Thus, the CSC asked all 91 of the Conference Delegates to choose between a) rolling the 2020 Conference over into April 2021 or b) holding a virtual Conference in October 2020.  The majority voted to postpone Conference to 2021. We will receive a final decision about the form of this Conference soon.
